Winter gear guide: does your dog actually need a coat?

Loyal Teal · September 13, 2026 · 1 min read

Not every dog needs a winter coat — but more dogs need one than you might think. Here's how to tell.

Dogs that need winter gear

  • Short or single-coated breeds — greyhounds, boxers, chihuahuas, vizslas. No undercoat means no insulation.
  • Small dogs — less body mass, more surface area. They lose heat fast.
  • Seniors and puppies — temperature regulation is weaker at both ends of life.
  • Lean or low-body-fat dogs — insulation is literally insulation.

Signs your dog is cold

  1. Shivering or trembling
  2. Tucked tail and hunched posture
  3. Lifting paws off the ground repeatedly
  4. Reluctance to keep walking / pulling toward home

What to look for in a coat

  • Coverage — chest and belly coverage matters more than the back
  • Water resistance — wet fur loses heat 20x faster than dry fur
  • Easy on/off — a coat you fight to put on is a coat you stop using
  • Harness access — a leash portal or a cut that works with your harness

Layer a fleece under a waterproof shell on the coldest days — same principle as your own winter system.
